Darwin Collection
The Darwin Collection contains a definitive set of BSD and GNU software for Darwin OS and Mac OS X. The four-disc set includes:

A complete copy of the Darwin OS 1.3.1 distribution
Nearly 2000 binary packages ported software offerings from the FreeBSD Ports Collection GNU-Darwin
a selection of free software
key development tools from the GNU Project of the Free Software Foundation


The Darwin OS distribution
Although Darwin OS is downloadable from Apple’s Internet servers, the distribution is so large that many prospective users find the idea of downloading it to be rather daunting. In addition, there is a very real possibility of transmission errors. So, we decided to bring you the entire Darwin OS image, saving you time, hassle, the possibility of errors, and in some cases expense.

The FreeBSD Ports Collection
The Ports Collection www.freebsd.org/ports is a marvel of community spirit and software engineering. More than 5000 Open Source offerings are covered by the collection, allowing FreeBSD users to go to the appropriate directory, type a simple command, and watch while the desired software is downloaded, patched, built, and installed on their systems. Or, if they wish, they can simply install a binary package for the offering in question.

Now, Dr. Love’s efforts are bringing this wonderful facility to the Darwin and Mac OS X communities. Applying porting savvy and hard work, he has succeeded in getting almost half of the Ports Collection to build. Future CD releases will cover even more programs, but we couldn’t justify keeping the early results from the community. Also, we hope that some of you will take advantage of this collection to help you port even more packages. After all, this is a community effort; we all benefit when a new package gets ported!

GNU-Darwin
The GNU-Darwin project gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net is extending and enhancing Darwin OS with free software. The current focus is the porting of GNU software to Darwin OS and Mac OS X. Future tasks will concentrate on the unique strengths of Darwin OS and Mach. Although Darwin OS and Mac OS X contain a few GNU tools, GNU/Linux users and other fans of the GNU Project www.gnu.org will recognize that many useful items have been left out. The GNU-Darwin project is working on adding these GNU tools back in, so that we can all enjoy their benefits! In the process, they hope to make Darwin OS a viable, free alternative for the Mac.

In summary, The Darwin Collection brings you an exciting and useful set of tools that you can load into your Darwin OS or Mac OS X system. And, because the collection is based on free software, you are welcome to share it with your friends, family, and colleagues; in short, with anyone you wish!

Project Status As mentioned above, The FreeBSD Ports Collection is huge over 5000 packages . More to the point, neither the collection’s infrastructure nor the individual “porting descriptions” were designed for use on Darwin or Mac OS X. In short, simply getting the 2000 packages on this collection to build was an enormous undertaking. Because few of these packages have received significant testing on Mac OS X, we can’t predict how they will act. They may exhibit run-time errors or even fail to run at all. If you can’t deal with this possibility, please wait for things to settle down a bit. We don’t want you to buy the collection and be unhappy with it!
